The Secular Franciscans Order (formerly called the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi), was founded by St. Francis, who wrote a Rule of Life for lay persons in 1221. The SFO is a true Order, recognized by the Catholic Church, because it has a Rule of Life and a Constitution, a Period of Formation, Admission and Profession, observance of the three evangelical counsels of poverty, obedience and purity of heart, and a distinguishing habit. Vatican 2 removed the need to wear a habit. The Tau Cross now represents the habit. The SFO is made up of lay people, whether married, divorced, widowed or single. Even diocesan clergy are allowed to enter the Order.
We have 38 current members and we provide asssistance to many different groups, including: financial assistance to a child in Honduras; clothes, toys and food to the Carriage House for Women and clothing for the Miller House for Men.
We meet the second Sunday of the month at 2:00pm. In the summer months we meet at St. John The Evangelist Church in Pocasset and the rest of the year at the Knights of Columbus in Buzzards Bay.
